Jacob was worried. It was the day before he was about to come face-to-face with his twin brother, Esau, whom he had tricked and stolen from years before. The next day, Esau would confront Jacob and his family with over 400 people. Needless to say, Jacob was worried and completely unsure of how he would manage to save himself and his family. What could he do?
Have you ever been in a situation that kept you up at night? Maybe it was a fight with a friend. Maybe it was your parent’s divorce. Maybe it was depression or anxiety or feeling like no matter how hard you tried, it just wasn’t good enough. Life is hard, and there are inevitable curve balls that leave us wondering how we’re going to manage. Genesis 32:26 tells the story of Jacob worrying and wondering how he’s going to get out of this one, when suddenly a stranger appears and wrestles with him all night long. There’s nothing to take your mind off your problems like a random stranger attacking you. When the sun began to rise, Jacob came to the humbling realization that he’d been wrestling with God.
When you recognize that in the midst of a trial, God is with you, you’ll take your eyes off your own strength and everything you can do to fix it yourself, and ask God for His help. There is relief in talking to the Lord and asking Him to take the burdens we can’t carry, rather than pacing all night long trying to figure things out. Jacob surrendered the worry and got to a place where he needed God’s blessing rather than rely on his own strength. The next day, he found peace with Esau.
What are some areas in your life that you’re worrying over or trying to control? How can you surrender them to the Lord? Have you asked Him to bless you rather than try to figure things out for yourself?
